Addison Fox Talks Her New Book, Gaming, and Crime Shows

Hey y'all! Addison Fox's newest book, JUST ONCE, popped into my inbox just a couple of weeks ago. I just think it looks FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. I was lucky enough to get a chance to host the author herself on my darling little blog. Stay tuned to hear her talk about her favorite shows of intrigue, as well as some games that she's addicted to!

When Jackie was kind enough to invite me to guest today, she’d suggested I might blog on one of two topics – my favorite video games or my favorite crime shows. Since my upcoming release, JUST ONCE, features a game developer and a detective, clearly I have a lot of love for both of these subjects! After considering it, I wondered if I could find a way to talk about both. I’m endlessly fascinated by human creativity and whether it’s solving the puzzle of a game or the puzzle of a crime, the ways we use our mind to solve problems is something I find incredibly interesting.

I’m a huge fan of spatial games like Candy Crush or Tetris and I love finding the right mix of properties that maximize a score. Clearly this is my mind’s way of making up to me the fact that I have absolutely NO three-dimensional spatial abilities. You want wrapping paper cut in a straight line or someone to pull in backward to a parking space – I am SO not your gal! But in two dimensions…well, that’s a puzzle I can get behind.

I’m also a huge fan of suspense shows – especially the ones who manage to keep the suspense high and the gross-out factor low. Probably my all time favorite show is CASTLE. I loved the mix of fun, humor and problem solving abilities both characters brought to the process – Rick with his creative writer’s mind and Kate with her focused, observant detective’s mind. Both were creative, but their creativity shined in vastly different ways. Add on the fun verbal sparing and romantic sparks and I was hooked from the very first episode.

In both cases, the enjoyment for me is tied to the problem solving. It’s also one of the things I love most about writing. There’s something incredibly fun in taking two characters and putting them together while also understanding the obstacles that keep them apart.

At its core, what I do as a writer is observe human nature and find a way to marry the rich diversity of who we are as individuals with the endlessly wonderful ways we find each other. As a romance writer, I get to take all those individual qualities and show how two people fall in love. It’s fun. And challenging. And like those puzzle games I love, it’s up to me to find the exact right mix of properties to show why they belong together.

What about you? Are you a gamer? A puzzle solver? A crime show junkie? Or maybe you enjoy other ways to stretch your creativity. Whatever it is, I’d love to hear it!

My thanks as well to Jackie for having me today! Not only have I looked forward to today, but Jackie clearly knew I was meant to come visit on “No Bent Spines.” My bookshelves are a pristine sea of uncracked spines on well-loved books!!

Thanks for joining me today!
XO,
Addison

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Despite early ambitions of being a diver, a drummer or a doctor, Addison Fox happily discovered she was more suited to life as a writer. She lives in New York and - thankfully - doesn't have to operate on anyone. You can find her at her home on the web at www.addisonfox.com. Her next release, JUST ONCE, the second book in her Brooklyn Brotherhood trilogy from St. Martin’s Swerve, will be out in February.
